Aussie Bombshell is a household professional spray tanning name in Perth, and for those who know the name or have experienced the Aussie Bombshell glow, you’ll also know the founder, Penni Towner.
As the face of the brand, it’s hard not to be drawn to Penni’s welcoming energy and her ability to make you feel so at home and at ease in what can be a very vulnerable environment, the spray booth. In a beauty-obsessed world often focused on flawlessness and perfection, Penni redefines the sunless tanning space with her message of confidence, empowerment and positive body image. This message is not only conveyed in the brand but is also completely embodied in Penni’s presence.
On the back of her professional spray tanning business, Aussie Bombshell’s Gradual Tan was born; a buildable, self-tanning creme that has become the newest addition to our self-tanning range. Gradual Tan is fast proving to be a universally flattering, no-fuss and easy to apply, at-home tanning option and we love that this product not only ticks all of the efficacy, quality and formulation requirements we expect from our products, but it also comes with a beautiful message.
We recently asked Penni some questions to learn a little more about the Aussie Bombshell Gradual Tan;
How was Aussie Bombshell conceived?
Aussie Bombshell was conceived in 2008. In the beginning, it was going to be more focused on cosmetics such as lipstick and glosses. At the time of sampling, the tan sample returned as a liquid which was too messy to apply, so I quickly changed direction to create a spray tan solution. Fast forward to 2018 and the Gradual Tan was finally released!
What did you set out to achieve with your products and services that were different from what was available on the market?
The main things I wanted to achieve was to overcome all of the obstacles that customers raise when it comes to fake tan: the concern of turning orange, the product not being dark enough, the smell and the mess of applying it, drying out the skin (just to name a few). I feel like our products really do overcome all of those obstacles.
Tell us about the name, what does it mean to be an Aussie Bombshell?
The term Aussie Bombshell is so iconic. For me, it is the heart of what it means to be an Australian woman – the effortless, natural beauty and endless summers at the beach, I really wanted to embody that in a brand.
What is the biggest thing you have learned working in the beauty industry?
The biggest thing I’ve learned by being in the beauty industry is that there is a LOT of misinformation that is driven through marketing. Brands throw around marketing jargon that customers easily absorb, so from a brand perspective, it’s very important to know your stuff, and be in a position to educated (and re-educate) customers, and don’t try and be something that you’re not.
Aside from the perfect bronzed glow, what do you want your customers to walk away with from Aussie Bombshell?
The main thing is that I want customers to feel confident in their own skin, but second to that, I want them to have the confidence to know that what they are putting on their skin is as natural as possible.
Tell us about your self-tanning Gradual Tan Lotion. What are your top 5 tips for the perfect application?
- Exfoliate your skin well – having a smooth base is crucial for the perfect tan
- Use barrier cream on drier areas of skin such as feet, ankles, knees, and hands
- Apply small amounts of product in circular motions until absorbed
- Don’t be scared to dilute our Gradual Tan with your own moisturiser to get a lighter result, especially when applying to the face
- If you make a mistake (particularly feet and ankles) and it’s too dark, a quick home hack is to get a lemon, cut it in half, then dip in bi-carb soda and rub it over the problem area
